Sunday I preached over Luke 12:22-34. It is a brutal passage of us living 21st Century, which makes it all the more necessary.

The “Big Idea” of the sermon was that how we speak and act shows our view of God. In being anxious we are “taking” God off his throne and placing ourselves there. Now, I know we cannot actually dethrone God, but by our anxiety we are telling Him that we think WE deserve to be there instead of him.

Anxiety shows a completely pagan view of the world. It says says God does not care, and He has left us to fend for ourselves.

Anxiety also shows that this life is all that matters.

Woah! Double Yikes!

Here are a few “key” verses to memorize and meditate upon from Luke 12:22-34.

12:23 “For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.”

12:29-31 “But seek his kingdom, and all these things will be given unto you.”

12:34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

If you have repented of your sins and confessed Jesus as Lord, and accepting the free gift of salvation, that means you are a Christian. That means your life is now about following Him, knowing Him, and showing Him to others.

As a Christian we realize that this life is good, but it is not all that there is. We long to be with Christ, our Savior, and to dwell with Him forever. This altars our whole state of mind from being earthly or “pagan” as the passage says. Rather, we are to be “heavenbound” in our thoughts and actions, showing to others with every word and deed that Jesus is Lord.

When Jesus is our Lord that means we are adopted into the family of God and have the Heavenly Father watching over us. Nothing can compare to his tender love and wise provision which He offers to his children.

If you are dealing with anxiety, I ask you to do three things

  1. Ask the Lord to send an extra amount of grace and comfort to you. The Holy Spirit indwells all who believe, and is there to comfort and guide you.
  2. Evaluate your view of God. Is He too small to be caring and providing?
  3. Remember that there is a much much bigger picture to look at.

Post Script: If you are someone who deals with severe anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts please see a licenced counselor. Do not wait around letting this get worse

I highly advise seeing one who believes in an all powerful and loving God, for that person with both point you to Scripture as well as towards seeing issues such as family history, neurological dysfunctions, chemical imbalances, dietary issues, marital issues, etc.
